Book Launch: Life with P. Journals, 1966–1976, by Musa McKim Guston
Edited by her daughter, Musa Guston Mayer—author of Night Studio (1988)—Life with P.: Journals, 1966–1976 is a collection of Musa McKim’s journals and poetry, set to offer an intimate view of her life as a writer and with the painter Philip Guston. The writings document daily life in Woodstock, trips to New York, and periods of travel and residency, coinciding with Guston’s shift toward his late figurative works. This rare window into McKim’s personal experiences and her creative thinking situates her within a generation of women—Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Gabriele Münter, Ana Mendieta, and Eileen O’Shaughnessy, among others—whose work and perspectives were often overshadowed by more visible male counterparts. Published by Hauser & Wirth, Life with P.: Journals, 1966–1976, will offer a view of Guston’s world from an intimate perspective not previously available.
A selection of Philip Guston’s paintings and works on paper will be on view at Hauser and Wirth’s 18th Street location, including the ‘Poem Pictures,’ drawings that respond to McKim’s poetry.
